Margaret’s Story: Staying Safe and Independent at Home
Margaret, 82, has started falling more often at home. She’s determined to stay in the house she’s lived in for 40 years—but her daughter, Susan, is worried. After Margaret’s most recent fall led to an emergency room visit, Susan isn’t sure what to do next.
What We Can Do
That’s where our Occupational Therapists can help.
We’ll work with Margaret and her family to regularly review her needs as they change over time. This includes updating home safety measures, adjusting equipment, and connecting her with community programs that promote wellness and fall prevention.
Our goal is to support Margaret’s independence and quality of life—helping her stay safely at home for as long as possible, while giving Susan confidence that a reliable plan is in place for whatever comes next.
If you or a loved one are falling at home and want to stay there safely, but you're unsure what steps to take—our Occupational Therapists can help.
We offer in-home assessments to identify:
Safety risks related to mobility, stairs, and daily routines
Bathroom hazards, lighting concerns, and home layout issues
Opportunities to reduce fall risk with simple, practical solutions
We may recommend:
Grab bars, non-slip mats, raised toilet seats, or better lighting
Equipment or home modifications to support independence
Caregiver education on how to assist safely
Referrals to community services and equipment providers
With the right supports in place, Margaret—and others like her—can stay in their homes with greater safety and confidence. Families gain peace of mind knowing there’s a clear plan and expert guidance to help every step of the way.
